earthing inspection

The employer's responsibility

DPR 462/01 requires every employer, even with just one employee, and certain categories of workers with non-standard contracts, such as worker-members of cooperatives, to request periodic and extraordinary inspections of earthing systems and lightning protection devices.

The purpose of these inspections is to verify that the safety requirements of installations are met and maintained over time, according to the applicable CEI standards.

Inspections under DPR 462/01 cannot be carried out by installers or electricians: they must be entrusted exclusively to a body authorised by the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy or, alternatively, to the local health authority (ASL) or the regional environmental agency (ARPA).

01

Lightning protection devices

The inspection includes a review of the technical report used to determine whether the structure is self-protected against lightning. Where a lightning protection system (LPS) is installed, its condition and correct operation are also checked.

02

Inspections in explosive atmospheres

In areas with a potential explosion risk, the entire electrical installation must be inspected periodically to confirm that it complies with the applicable legislation and technical standards.

03

Inspection of installations up to and above 1000 V

The inspection confirms that the earthing system complies with current legislation, including Legislative Decree 81/08 and Law 186/68, and with the applicable technical standards of good practice, such as CEI 64-8.

04

We consider every possible risk

How often the inspections required by DPR 462/01 must be carried out depends on the type of environment and installation.

The inspection must be carried out every two years in the following cases:

  • construction sites;
  • areas at greatest risk in the event of fire, also identified through the Fire Prevention Certificate;
  • premises used for medical purposes, such as hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient clinics, doctors’ surgeries and similar facilities;
  • places with an explosion hazard.

For all other premises, the inspection must be carried out every five years.
An extraordinary inspection must also be requested following substantial changes to the installation.

Inspecting an earthing system covers not only the earth electrodes but all the components and devices needed to protect people from the risk of electric shock through indirect contact, including automatic disconnection of the supply.
