Environmental emissions analysis

Atmospheric emissions, one of the most significant environmental impacts of industrial sites, are regulated by Part V of Legislative Decree 152/2006 (the Italian Environmental Code), which covers their prevention and limitation.

In particular, article 269(1) requires all facilities that produce atmospheric emissions to obtain a specific permit. The Decree was subsequently amended and supplemented following the entry into force of D.Lgs. 128/2010 and D.Lgs. 46/2014. The latter also regulates incineration and co-incineration plants, with provisions that, from 1 January 2016, repealed those of D.Lgs. 133/2005.

Legislative Decree 152/2006 sets out two levels of authorisation for industrial activities:

  • Ordinary permits, the procedure for which is set out in art. 269 of D.Lgs. 152/2006;
  • General authorisations under Article 272(2) and (3) for the exempted activities listed in Part II of Annex IV to Part V of Legislative Decree 152/2006.

Our services:

  • Application for authorisation of atmospheric and diffuse emissions – AUA (Single Environmental Authorisation);
  • Application to join a general authorisation;
  • Analysis of atmospheric emissions;
  • Completion and submission of the Solvent Management Plan;
  • Help with completing the emissions maintenance log.

radon gas

Radon gas

The only reliable way to establish the presence of radon gas and its concentration is to take measurements with dedicated detectors. Three different sampling approaches can be used to detect radon:

  • Spot measurement, to measure the radon content of individual air or water samples over a short period (instantaneous measurements);
  • Continuous, to measure concentration fluctuations over periods of around an hour; the equipment is complex and allows automatic measurement cycles;
  • Integrated measurement, providing a time-averaged radon concentration over a period ranging from a few days to several months.

Radon sampling techniques can also be classified by the instruments used, which may be active or passive depending on whether or not they require a power supply.

HOMES: Radon measurements at home, with recommended periods of 3–5 months in autumn and winter for reliable annual estimates. Results and reference levels are provided in a certificate.

BUSINESSES: Radon measurements in workplaces last one year, in accordance with Legislative Decree 241/00. Our staff manage the dosimeters and then provide a technical report with the results and the legal reference levels.

SCHOOLS AND NURSERIES: Radon screening measurements carried out in all schools and nurseries, including new or refurbished buildings. Measurement campaigns run every year from January to June.

water analysis

Water sampling and analysis

The Consolidated Environmental Law (art. 74(1)(gg) and (ff)) defines “waste water” as “all waste water coming from a discharge” and “discharge” as “any release made exclusively through a permanent collection system that seamlessly connects the waste water production cycle with the receiving body – surface water, the ground, the subsoil or the sewer network – regardless of its polluting nature, including after prior purification treatment”.

Discharges from industrial processes often contain pollutants. D.Lgs. 152/06 as amended sets permissible pollutant concentration limits in order to protect the environment and the quality of groundwater and surface water.

To protect water resources in terms of both quantity and quality, businesses that use water in their production cycle must obtain a discharge permit. Under article 124 of D.Lgs. 152/2006, all discharges of industrial waste water and contaminated rainwater into the public sewer must be authorised by a formal act.
